Around 40,000 students study at Florida State University, the largest university in the state. Police has shot dead the gunman and secured the Stozier Library, where the incident allegedly occurred.
More details are yet to emerge on the condition of the injured. The ABC report doesn't confirm whether the injured were students. Immediately after the firing started, the university sent emergency alerts to students, asking them to seek shelter as it was a "dangerous situation".
"Students received a message from University saying, "*FSU ALERT!* Dangerous Situation! Main Campus - Tallahassee. Seek shelter immediately, away from doors and windows". The report quotes students saying that police came on the intercom and asked them to hide as there was as a gunman in the lobby.
The police instructed the students to stay away from doors and windows. The varsity at 2:41 a.m., issued a statement on its Facebook page declaring the campus was secured. It later tweeted
"Working with officials to confirm details. AREA HAS BEEN SECURED. Please continue to stay safe and heed Law Enforcement Instructions"
A NYT report said that the university was recently in news for preferential treatment in criminal matters for athletes on its football team.
